Governor Susan Kihika has announced that Nakuru County intends to make the Governor's Cup an annual tournament, as the county seeks to strengthen grassroots sports development and talent identification.

‎‎Speaking during the launch of the inaugural Governor's Cup 2026 at Afraha Stadium, Kihika says the competition would provide a platform for young players across the county to showcase their abilities while promoting community engagement through sport.

‎‎The tournament, which is being organized in partnership with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), will be played at village, ward and sub-county levels before culminating in county finals.

‎‎According to the governor, prizes have been set aside at every stage of the competition from the Ward Level to the County Level, with the overall winners set to receive Sh1 million at the end of the competition.

‎‎Kihika describes sports as an important tool for youth empowerment, talent identification and social development. She said the county government would continue investing in sports programmes and facilities to create opportunities for young people both on and off the field.

‎‎The governor also highlights the ongoing renovation of Afraha Stadium, a project being undertaken jointly by the county government and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), noting that improved sports infrastructure would support the growth of local talent.

‎‎The launch was followed by opening matches that attracted local football fans. In the first fixture, Ogilgei FC defeated Wakulima FC in a penalty shootout after the teams played out a closely contested encounter. Kivumbini FC then secured a 2-1 victory over Kibara FC of Kuresoi North to advance to the next round of the competition.

‎‎The Governor highlights that the tournament is expected to bring together teams from across Nakuru's eleven sub-counties as competition progresses towards the county finals.
