It is official, this year the Nakuru Universities and Colleges will have a new champion in the men’s category.

This is after Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, JKUAT, who are two-time champions, were ruthlessly beaten by their arch nemesis Rift Valley National Polytechnic, RVNP.

Last week, RVNP beat JKUAT in one of their best-of-three matches. Coming into this week, JKUAT had to save face, and indeed they did.

In the last few seconds they managed to get a win, narrowly winning 46-44.

Both teams tied at one game each. At the start of the third game, both teams were going basket for basket; however, at the end of the first quarter RVNP won 19-11.

The fight was just starting. Coming into the second quarter it was still anyone’s game.

Just as the second quarter was progressing, a loud scream was heard from one side of the court.  Klinsmann Orina, the JKUAT point guard, was down on the floor clutching on his knee.

Soon after, he was assisted out of the court. JKUAT were down a man, and a very vital player at that. While also considering they did not have a strong bench, this spelled disaster for them.

Their rivals capitalized on this, and the third quarter signified the beginning of the end for JKUAT.

By the time the quarter was ending, JKUAT lacked coordination; were out of breath and some of the players were seen limping from time to time as they transitioned from defense to offense and vice versa.

RVNP took advantage of this and beat them with a succession of quick fast breaks that put the final coffin on JKUAT’s grave.

The fourth quarter wasn’t even a contest, and by the time the final whistle was blown, the happiness on the face of the RVNP was profound. The game ended 60-52; finally, David had toppled Goliath.

This victory was special for the lads considering in the last two years they have managed to make it to the finals; however, JKUAT has outplayed them time and again.

The finals will see bitter rivals Kabarak Royals face off against RVNP Rockets in a Moi Derby Classic.
