Hells Gate biking festival: A day of dance, good food and beautiful scenery

As I set out for the Hells Gate Biking Festival, I worried I might arrive late because of the usual snarl-up along the Nairobi–Naivasha Highway. Luckily, the traffic had cleared, and I made it on time.
The sunlit, dusty roads of Hells Gate National Park welcomed me warmly, and I silently thanked the gods that I wasn’t late for the first event, the 21KM Twiga Race.
One of the most breathtaking highlights of the festival was the scenery, the dramatic cliffs towering over the park, which created a spectacular backdrop for the event.

Adding to the festival’s charm was the presence of the official mascot, Simba. The lively character was a favorite among children and adults alike, posing for photos, cheering on the cyclists, and bringing an extra spark of fun to the family-friendly atmosphere.
As cyclists prepared to hit the trail, exhibitors were busy setting up their tents. Food vendors, drink stalls, and bicycle accessory stands added a lively buzz to the grounds.
Away from the race, campers pitched their tents, ready for an evening under the stars.
Within minutes, the first race was flagged off, with both children and adults joining the adventure.
The crowd grew larger as the day went on. DJ Dimple kept the music playing while MC Hyper Prince hyped up the audience.
Cyclists battled not just the scorching sun, but also the tough, sandy terrain that tested their endurance.
Some amateur riders stumbled and fell, but their determination kept them pushing forward.

As evening approached, the festival transformed into a laid-back social affair. Cars opened up, camping chairs unfolded, and portable fridges came out.
The smell of barbecue filled the air as people gathered to enjoy the golden sunset, serenaded by live music from the band.
Now, all eyes are on the much-anticipated final day, which promises the grand 50KM Buffalo Race, kids’ challenges, and an adult relay.
