Football fans in Nakuru can now enjoy the African Nations Championship (CHAN) matches free of charge at the Maasai Market.

This follows an initiative by the county government to set up a public viewing area where residents can watch football matches, starting with today's quarter-final between Kenya and Madagascar at 5 pm.

According to Francis Njoroge, the deputy director of Political Affairs, the initiative aims to bring football enthusiasts together in a vibrant, safe space where they can cheer on the national team.

It also gives locals who have not been able to travel to Nairobi to watch the games live the opportunity to experience football.

By mid-morning on Friday, event staff were on site installing a large outdoor screen and sound systems ahead of the match.

Mr Njoroge says that sports have the power to unite communities and that such moments create a sense of belonging. This is in addition to the fact that Nakuru occasionally provides players for the national team.

He adds that the county is keen to ensure that fans enjoy a world-class experience while supporting the national team. The fan zone will also provide an opportunity for young people to connect and share in the pride of supporting Kenya.

“We are expecting upwards of 2,000 fans to turn up for the game, as this is our only fan zone. If Kenya progresses, we will set up more fan zones in different central locations to make them accessible to as many residents as possible," says Mr Njoroge. He adds that there will be adequate seating and that other amenities are being factored in to ensure comfort and safety during the event.

Creating fan zones he says also allows the county to promote local talent and businesses that benefit from the gatherings.

Mr Njoroge adds that Nakuru has always been passionate about sport, and this initiative demonstrates the county’s commitment to supporting the national team.
