On November 26, 2023, the curtains came down on the Nakuru Universities Colleges Basketball League.

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology JKUAT (Nakuru Campus) were crowned champions after a gruelling battle with arch-rivals Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology (RVIST).

This year, a new chapter begins with a new season of the Nakuru University and Colleges League.

According to Deep Crater League chairman Fidel Ongolla, expectations are high this year.

"Looking at what we have achieved in the last two years, I can confidently say that we are on the right track and growing steadily and surely," said Ongolla.

The main aim of the league, he says, is to develop young talent and bring together those who enjoy the great game of basketball.

This new season sees new entrants to the league such as the Laikipia University basketball team aka The Rebel.

From the first round of matches played last weekend, it is clear that the Rebel have a lot to prove after struggling against last year's finalists. They lost both their matches against RVIST and JKUAT.

The rest of the teams came out and put their best foot forward in some highly competitive matches that saw Kabarak, RVIST, JKUAT, Laikipia University and Nakuru Teachers Training and College all playing some very exciting basketball.

The season has only just begun but we can expect a lot from all the teams, with the question being, will champions JKUAT successfully defend and retain their title?

Or will we see a new champion this year? Only time will tell.
