This is the second weekend in a row that Afraha stadium is hosting a myriad of matches, giving the stadium a new breath of life since it closures four years ago.
Last weekend, the stadium hosted the season ending match of the Football Kenya Federation division one clash between Nakuru Bucks and Zoo Kericho.
The match which ended in a draw with each team scoring three goals saw Nakuru Bucks finish their campaign in eighth place with 40 points.
These matches quelled the uproar and public outcry witnessed in the recent months by Nakuru residents who demanded the immediate reopening of the stadium.
About four months ago, the County bowed to pressure from the football community and promised to open the stadium’s gates.
Hassan Hussein a football coach in Nakuru was pleased with the fact that the County Government kept its word.
“Now that we already have the stadium open we are happy. However, we know there is still a lot of work to be done. We are now targeting its completion,” he says.
Peter Kamau Kasskass, National Executive Committee member and Chairperson of the FKF League says they are looking forward to Afraha hosting the matches.
"Apart from the matches that are going to be hosted this weekend, we are also looking forward to the stadium hosting future tournaments," he says.
Kamau also notes that Ulinzi stars football club are eagerly awaiting to return to their home pitch.
"Dunston Nyaudo (Ulinzi stars head coach) visited the stadium and recommended a few upgrades to the city management before Ulinzi can use it. We noticed there were security gaps since the perimeter wall needs to be reinforced and improved. Additionally, the playing surface needs a bit more work," he notes.
The chairperson says that it's all system go for this weekend and urges fans to come out in large numbers to support their teams.
