15 schools turn up for the largest skating competition in Nakuru city
‘The more you fall the more you learn,’ that was the common belief that carried the day on the second edition of the Skate squad rollers speed skating competition that took place in Roots Junior Secondary School on Saturday.
A total of 15 schools graced this occasion, with everyone aiming at putting their best foot forward.
Those who participated in the event were between the ages of 7 to 13, all grouped into different categories.
The races were highlighted by fast paced action and cheers coming from the crowd making it all the more exhilarating.
Speaking to the leader of the Skate squad rollers Matia Brian, he says that indeed the event was successful and that the turnout was very impressive.
"Last year when we held the first edition, there were only six schools that participated in the event but this year we have had 15 coming in. This is a true indication that the sport is growing," he notes.
Brian who is also a skating coach says that people of all ages can learn how to skate.
However, he has noticed that those between the ages of 5 to 25 years are the ones who have really embraced the sport.
"In today's event we held races for both speed skating and slalom skating. The races were intense and highly competitive with all the schools bringing their A game."
The school that carried the day in the competition was Crater Academy slightly edging out the hosts Roots Academy that came in second.
