Nakuru-based spoken-word artist Dennis Mwangi commonly known as Timelines Poetry is set to take his craft to the international stage as he represents Kenya at the 5th World Poetry Slam Championship, part of the 30th Poetry Africa Festival in Durban, South Africa.

The festival, which runs from October 5 to 10, 2026, will bring together poets from across the world for a celebration of spoken word, poetry and performance, while the World Poetry Slam Championship will pit participating countries against each other in a competitive showcase of poetry.

Timelines has been drawn in Group D alongside poets representing Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mauritania, England, Togo, Morocco, Costa Rica and Greece.

His participation comes after a notable run in Kenya’s slam poetry scene, where he emerged as the 67th Poetry Slam Africa Champion, earning recognition as one of the country’s leading spoken-word performers.

Beyond competitive poetry, Timelines is an artist whose work cuts across poetry, theatre and performance. His artistic practice explores the human experience, using words, performance and storytelling to provoke thought and create connections with audiences.

Consequently, his appearance at the international competition gives the Nakuru artist an opportunity to take a Kenyan perspective to a wider audience while also competing against poets from different cultural and artistic backgrounds.

Timelines is an artistic luminary, writer, poet, theatre maker, director and scholar whose work is driven by a desire to contribute to the betterment of humanity.

His work, seeks to move and inspire audiences while challenging perspectives and encouraging reflection on the transformative role of art.

For Timelines, the Durban appearance will therefore be more than a competition, as it places a Nakuru-rooted creative voice in a global gathering of spoken-word artists.
