Meet a painter who doubles up as a Public Litigator
Laban Omusindi-a Nakuru’s Menengai East Ward resident has found pride in matters of Public Interest Litigation.
Speaking to Mtaa Wangu on February 21, 2023, Omusindi who has no background in Law studies revealed that after seeing several gaps in matters of governance and non-compliance to the Constitution of Kenya by state actors, he chose to take action.
He was taken through some capacity building by Residents Associations and Nakuru based NGOs that focus on matters of law and governance.
“As a result of the 2010 constitution, I decided to venture into the Public Interest Litigation just to see that the law is adhered to” he stated.
Under his efforts, several Public interest petitions have been filed at the Nakuru Law Courts as he sought to put things right in matters of governance.
Key among them, is the petition he filed to challenge the COVID-19 budget that was being tabled in the County Assembly of Nakuru without public participation as enshrined in the Constitution.
Omusindi is also the local who went to Nakuru Law Courts to challenge the composition of officials of Ubuntu Peoples Forum Party arguing that civil servants are not supposed to hold positions in Political Parties.
“The law restrains public servants from active politics” he says.
He has also petitioned on several matters of land grabbing in Nakuru citing land grabbing a menace in the country.
Currently, his petition calling for the suspension and disbandment of Nakuru County Public Service Board over violations of constitution has been received by the County Assembly’s clerk on February 16, 2023 as per letter seen by Mtaa Wangu.
Omusindi, who is also a father of 2 reveals that his job of public interest litigation has challenges among them threats from political class.
If given a chance through sponsorship, he says he is ready to go to a school of law and equip himself better.
When not in the corridors of Nakuru Law Courts, you will find him doing painting and interior design as a way of getting his daily income.
