How content creation helped make the dreams of an 11-year-old from Maili Kumi come true

A mother's joy is to see her children succeed.

Such was the case for the mother of Princess Angle, the 11-year-old girl who was given a full scholarship by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagwa after she enthralled her with a poem during the Akorino National Prayers Conference at Nakuru High School.

Despite being a casual labourer, Ann Kariuki chose to enrol her child in a private school to give her the best education.

"I am a class six dropout. As a mother, I just wanted to see my daughter break the glass ceiling. Although we have several government schools around Maili Kumi, I wanted her to go to a private school to increase her chances of a better future," said Ann.

However, Ms Kariuki notes that at times it became difficult to keep her daughter in school due to financial challenges.

During her visit to the Deputy President's residence in Karen, she revealed that her child had been out of school since January due to lack of school fees.

"It has been a hard time for us as a family and I never knew that the poems I write for Angel to recite would change her story. She has been reciting poetry since she was in grade 4. Before writing the piece she performed, I fasted for three days. Little did I know that this particular poem would change her life.  I am grateful to God that through this scholarship she will be able to fulfil her lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer," she says.

In addition to her mother, Angel's older brother and Bravo Kimagoto, a content creator, have been instrumental in exposing and nurturing her talent.

Kimagoto says he first met Angel on the street, crying because she had been kicked out of school.

From their conversation, he noticed her talent and asked the brother if they could showcase her talent through short TikTok clips.

"The child is bright and talented. She recites poetry and has built up a large online following on TikTok. There is nothing stopping her from becoming the great lawyer she wants to be. Her zeal and determination are unparalleled," says Kimagoto.

As fate would have it, with the support of a mother with great writing skills and a content creator, this girl has secured a chance to join the Utawala Academy and continue her education.
