Finger snapping and cheers resounded as each poet exited the stage during the fifth edition of Poetry After Lunch (PAL) event at the Nakuru Players' Theatre.

The day’s theme, "Religion Under Siege," was prompted by the alarming rise of cults and the harmful impact they have had on vulnerable individuals in the country.

Through their poems, the artists fearlessly denounced the extent to which people have allowed themselves to be manipulated by religious indoctrination, forsaking the true teachings.

Fifi the Poet, took the stage to remind the crowd that although many religious organizations and associations provide guidance, support, a sense of unity, and community to their members, it is crucial to remain vigilant as religion can easily turn into a cult.

The event climaxed with a captivating performance by Denis Ndung’u, known as Timelines Poet, when he skilfully called out individuals who profess religious devotion while their actions speak otherwise, inspiring the audience to embrace love as the highest form of religion.

Speaking with Mtaa Wangu, PAL coordinator Lucy Kung'u emphasizes that PAL's primary objective is to identify, develop, and nurture artists through capacity building, networking, and partnerships for the artists.

Furthermore, the trainings aim to enhance artists' writing and performing abilities, entrepreneurial skills and personal branding.

Ms Kung’u also encouraged aspiring poets who wish to be part of the show to audition at the theatre, stating that the event takes place every third Sunday of the month and that they plan to expand their outreach program to other venues in Nakuru.

Other artists who performed in the show include Dogoo dē Student, Chotara the Poet, Fidel Poet, Poetic Smartic, Debby Poet, Ramzah, Walking Shadow Poet with a special appearance by Ogoti the Boy Child, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the event.
