NaxVegas: Why Park and Chill is becoming more popular than clubbing

The once-famous music band Camp Mulla sang "The party don't stop, it goes on and on" in one of their popular songs released more than five years ago, is a statement that Kenyans have managed to stay true to over the years by redefining the party scene.

The concept of park and chill, for example, is something that has always existed in Nakuru, only the locals never used to call it that.

For a long time, on weekends and especially during the holidays, locals would treat themselves to parking their cars in Lake Nakuru National Park, enjoying the scenic views and cool breeze, munching on snacks in the company of friends and family, and interacting up close with the monkeys.

Over time, this has been passed down from generation to generation, and the trend really took off during the Covid-19 period, when most entertainment venues were closed due to social distance restrictions.

Park and chill became the new sanctuary for many revellers and the concept remained the same as the tradition, but with a little upgrade and style added.

These upgrades include hyped music from a DJ, bonfires and, not to forget, plenty of drinks and food to give it that open-air club vibe.

Lake Elementaita, Egerton Castle and many other open spaces have become famous for this.

Speaking to Mtaa Wangu, Dj and MC at Barn Grill and Lounge, Boniface Gitau aka HushBk, says the park and chill trend is something he has noticed Nakuru people embracing even in his establishment.

"The party scene is always changing and we try to keep up with the new trends. For example, during the day, especially on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, people want a place where they can just relax before going home or to the clubs later on, and Park and Chill provides that," he said.

If you are looking to try something new this festive season, going somewhere safe and secure to enjoy yourself with friends and family would be an adventure worth adding to your bucket list.
