Nakuru's night life: What revellers go through when they cannot pay the bill

On one of our weekend trips, my friends and I took part in this ritual, which ended up sparking an interesting conversation among us; crazy situations people have got into when they were unable to pay their bill at a club.

My long-time friend, Nancy*, started the conversation by sharing her crazy experience that left everyone at the table in stitches.

Below is an account from Nancy, Michael* and a manager at a popular club in Nakuru.

Nancy.

It was my first time in a nightclub so I didn't know what to expect. I remember leaving with two thousand shillings and even graciously offering to pay for my team's drinks. By the end of the night, the bill was obviously more than I had on hand. I had to hide in the toilets for almost an hour to call everyone on my contact list and ask them to send money to help me pay.

Michael.

After a wild night out, my friends and I were unable to pay the bill in full after one of our friends failed to chip in while we were paying the bill. Not only did my friend not have the money to pay, but he started causing a scene when the waiters demanded payment. Security was called and they took our phones, shoes and belts. We had to leave our phones at the club for almost a week before the man coughed up the money. Trust us, we cut him off afterwards.

These embarrassing situations are a common narrative for many clubs. Less than a week ago, a group of university students ordered drinks that were way over their budget. When they realised their mistake, they had the 'brilliant' idea of walking out of the club. When their bill was brought to the table, one of them asked for a PDQ machine to pay as her colleagues began to leave the club one by one. When security realised what was happening, they caught up with the group just outside the club and confiscated all their valuables until payment was made. To reduce the number of such incidents, we usually ask customers to pay before opening and serving their drinks.
