When you try to work, but your mind is already in holiday mode

Working during the festive season can feel particularly tough, especially when you have to be in the office instead of enjoying the holidays to the full.

At these moments, I often regret that I didn't save my leave days for December and wish I could swap my workload for a little more holiday cheer.

To make matters worse, social media seems full of impractical advice that could easily make anyone lose focus on their work if they dared to follow it.

But while the world around me is full of festive cheer, my deadlines, responsibilities and daily tasks remain firmly in place.

There's always the temptation to take drastic measures, like shutting down my laptop and declaring the year over and dive headfirst into holiday indulgence.

But I remind myself that January is fast approaching - and with it, the reality of bills and responsibilities.

So as a responsible adult I try to strike a balance that ensures I stay motivated while still embracing the spirit of the season.

For starters to make the most of this time, I look for ways to combine joy and productivity. For example, discussing flexible working hours with my employer or exploring remote working options to help better manage my time while maintaining my professional commitments.

Clear communication with colleagues about my availability also ensures that everyone's expectations are aligned.

I make it a point to get into the festive spirit wherever I can. Whether it's joining team activities, participating in virtual meetings or coordinating schedules with family, I try to stay connected and celebrate in a meaningful way.

Equally important is prioritising my wellbeing. Stress and low energy levels can easily sap my focus, so I build small moments of self-care into my day - taking walks, stretching or even just stopping to breathe deeply. These simple acts help me recharge and stay on track.

To keep the holiday spirit alive, decorate your workspace or organise some light-hearted activities with colleagues. Creating a cheerful environment has a way to lift up spirits and make the workday a little brighter.

Finally, I see the holidays as a time for reflection. It's an opportunity to acknowledge my accomplishments over the past year and set intentions for what's to come.

This process helps me end the year on a positive note and feel prepared for the next chapter.

For me, it's not just about surviving December, but finding ways to thrive, both personally and professionally. By planning ahead and staying flexible, I can make the season both productive and memorable.
