Most evenings at around 7pm, the residents of Satellite in Nakuru city are now familiar with blue uniforms of police officers patrolling the area with their vehicle, ensuring the residents have the surge feeling of relief that there is someone looking out for them.

This is a month, after the residents raised complaints to their MCA through Mtaa Wangu of the violence, extortion and murder that had been plaguing the neighbourhood.

Desperate pleas for peace among the residents who faced the wrath of the robbers who would rob them, beat them and leave them with stab wounds filled the air, prompting a group of dedicated police officers to take action.

Bwana MCA: Insecurity is hurting us in Satellite estate

The police officers, armed with rifles, as they are also vulnerable, are therefore responding to the demand of more security and justice by increasing their presence and engagement in the area, to protect the people.

As the police officers stroll through the alleyways, the fear on the residents’ faces begins to wane.

Maintaining a respectful distance from their patrol car, the officers monitor the surroundings, ready to respond swiftly to any signs of trouble, without necessarily having direct interaction with the
residents.

The police officers not engaging with the residents is to ensure they maintain a sense of order without necessarily disrupting the peaceful routine of the people carrying out their business.

Elizabeth Elishiwani a business lady says "we appreciate the police officers patrolling as robbery has reduced next to the main road. But we would appreciate if the police patrol inside the feeder roads as well."

Jonah Mwangi, a boda boda operator agrees with Elizabeth, saying what the police have done is commendable, but more should be done in the inner parts of the estate.

The residents hope the tense neighbourhood will gradually develop a comforting melody if the consistency of the police officers does not cease.
