Newly launched Nakuru Run Club gives fitness enthusiasts fresh options

What started as a simple idea to find people to run with has grown into one of Nakuru's emerging fitness communities, bringing together dozens of residents every weekend to pursue healthier lifestyles while building meaningful friendships.
Speaking during an interview, Nakuru Run Club founder Ben Karimi says the club was established in March after he realized that many fitness enthusiasts lacked a community where they could exercise together. Having previously struggled with a knee injury, Karimi says he understood the motivation that comes from running alongside others instead of training alone.
According to him, the vision was to create more than just a running group. Instead, the aim was to establish a community of like-minded individuals who encourage one another on their fitness journeys while fostering lasting social connections.
"Although the club had a modest beginning, with only two people attending its inaugural run, it has since experienced remarkable growth. Today, the club attracts an average of 35 participants every Saturday morning for its weekly runs, which begin between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m.," he notes
Reflecting on the journey over the past four months, Karimi describes the club's greatest achievement as the sense of ownership that members have developed.
He notes that what initially depended entirely on the founder has now evolved into a community-driven initiative, with members volunteering to organize activities, support operations, and contribute ideas that continue to strengthen the club.
Despite the encouraging progress, Karimi acknowledges that the club still faces challenges, particularly in branding and marketing. He explains that the group hopes to acquire branded merchandise, promotional materials, and event equipment to create a more engaging experience for participants.
"While the club has successfully established regular running sessions, the next phase is to transform each gathering into a complete community event by incorporating social activities alongside fitness," Karimi highlights
In line with this vision, the club recently introduced its first "Breakfast After Run" event, marking its first organised social activity beyond the weekly runs.
Karimi explains that the breakfast meet-up is intended to become a monthly tradition, providing members with an opportunity to interact outside the running sessions. Additionally, the club plans to introduce more activities that combine physical fitness with social engagement to strengthen the sense of community among members.
Furthermore, he emphasizes that inclusivity remains one of the club's core values. Unlike competitive running groups that cater mainly to experienced athletes, Nakuru Run Club welcomes people of all fitness levels, including complete beginners who wish to start their wellness journey.
