Nakuru journalists gathered on Friday evening to celebrate the first anniversary of the Nakuru Journalists Association during a grand gala dinner.

The event highlighted the achievements of media professionals, with several receiving prestigious awards for their exceptional contributions to the field.

The evening’s highlight was the Journalist of the Year Award, which went to Cynthia Gichiri of African Uncensored.

Ms Gichiri was recognized for her ground breaking exposé on the Fake Fertilizer Scandal.

Her investigative piece shed light on critical issues in Kenya’s agricultural sector, exemplifying her commitment to truth and accountability.

Raphael Munge, a veteran journalist with a career spanning decades, was honoured with the Veterans Award.

Munge's fearless reporting during Kenya's struggle for multiparty democracy in the early 1990s remains a defining moment in his career.

Despite sustaining stab wounds from pro-government youths while in the company of leaders like Bishop Ndingi Mwana a’Nzeki, Kenneth Matiba, and Martha Karua, Munge continued to tell the story of a nation in transition.

Beyond his reporting, he has mentored numerous journalists, many of whom have risen to prominence.

Mediamax’s Catherine Kariuki received the Resilience Award for her extraordinary courage during the Gen Z protests in Nakuru City.

Despite being shot with four rubber bullets while covering the demonstrations, she returned to work upon recovery, showcasing unwavering dedication to journalism.

Nation Media’s Joseph Openda, who also serves as the Chairman of the Nakuru Journalists Association, was presented with the Leadership Award.
