Nancy Ndegwa popularly known as Mama Street joins the list of 180 individuals who were proposed for the declaration as heroes in 2025 by National Heroes Council.

Mama Street is proposed to be honoured under the human rights category for what the Council terms is her contribution to human rights protection.

“She established a CBO (Community Based Organization) that has transformed the lives of over 1000 vulnerable children and youth in Nakuru County through rescue, rehabilitation, reintegration and mentorship programmes. Her work continues to drive dignity and empowerment of marginalized communities,” the council says in a statement.

Mama Street has come out numerous times to protect and uphold the interests of street children. On June 7, she found herself behind bars after police demanded she halt feeding homeless families.

Additionally, through her Realz hands of love foundation in partnership with other organizations they came out numerous times to assist the street families.

One such occasion was on January 2 where they celebrated the New year celebrations with the street families.

Joining Mama Street in the list will be Rev.  Paul Kemoi Kipkorir who will be recognized under the spiritual leader’s category and in the cultural and spiritual value category, Evans Keya Osango will be feted.

The council further states that if there is any member of the public who are of the opinion that the proposed persons to be honoured is not deserving are hereby invited to avail any objections and representations.

“Objections and representations (through sworn affidavits) should be submitted 30th September 2025,” says the council.

The national heroes are usually recognized annually during the Mashujaa Day celebrations on October 20.
