Game on: How Katodua games are helping people reconnect

Hosting friends, family or colleagues for a game night can be an exciting way to create memories and strengthen relationships. However, for many people, the experience can quickly become challenging when they realize they have limited games to keep their guests engaged and entertained.
As social gatherings increasingly compete with the distraction of mobile phones and other digital devices, finding creative ways to bring people together has become more important. It is this gap that entrepreneur CephasJoe Irungu sought to address when he started Katodua Games in 2022.
Irungu, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Community Development, says his motivation was to create environments where people could interact, talk, have fun and enjoy each other’s company.
“I started the game services because I wanted people to come together. The idea later expanded into team-building activities, game-hiring services and the sale of toys to families seeking to spend more quality time together,” he explained.
According to Irungu, the business initially attracted hotels because games offered guests an opportunity to interact with their children and one another instead of remaining on their phones.
Consequently, hotels became a clientele and referrals for birthday parties, corporate team-building activities and other events.
Irungu says demand for the services has increased as more people recognize the need for meaningful face-to-face interaction.
However, he says one of the biggest challenges remains convincing clients that games and professional facilitation are worth paying for, particularly at a time when households and organizations are prioritizing essential expenses.
In addition, securing affordable physical space remains a challenge.
Despite these hurdles, Irungu believes the opportunities in the sector are significant. He notes that there is already a wide variety of games available, but what is lacking is greater awareness and appreciation of their role in bringing people together.
Looking ahead, Katodua Games plans to host more events, including picnics, while working towards establishing a dedicated center where families can access games, entertainment and other services.
For Irungu, the ultimate goal goes beyond simply providing games. It is about creating spaces where people can put down their phones, interact freely and rediscover the joy of spending time together.
