From Nakuru to The X Factor Latvia: How Itha is taking her soulful voice global

Catherine Mureithi also known as Itha performing at X Factor Latvia.
I first came across Catherine Mureithi, better known by her stage name, Itha and her music on Instagram, when a friend posted a story with one of her songs playing softly in the background.
Her voice immediately caught my attention: it was rich, soulful and deeply emotive. In fact, it carried a sound that could easily make one assume she wasn’t Kenyan.
When I later discovered that she had been on X Factor Latvia in 2025, I found myself cheering her on from afar. Her voice alone tells you that she was born to sing a natural gift that is now reaching international stages.
Born and raised in Nakuru, Itha recalls that her earliest musical memory was with her sister. The two would often sing together at night before bed, and these moments sparked her lifelong desire to pursue music. This passion led her to participate in music festivals from a young age, and it soon became clear that music was more than just a hobby; it was her calling.
While studying at Harambee Khalsa Primary School and later at Christ the King Primary School, she was an active member of school music groups and the church choir. Her love of singing only grew stronger, and she frequently entered music competitions to hone her talent.
“Despite music being reserved for the upper classes, I would ask my teachers if I could join the competitions. Being part of any musical performance always made me happy,” she recalls.
At just 13 years old, Itha recorded her first song, marking the beginning of her professional journey. She still remembers earning her first payment of Sh1,500 a moment that convinced her that music could truly be her path.

Soon after, she had the opportunity to sing backing vocals for a Los Angeles-based jazz musician, an experience that broadened her exposure and deepened her commitment to her craft.
“When that opportunity arose, I knew I had to do my best. I practised daily and my parents fully supported me, ensuring that I received the necessary vocal training,” says the 28-year-old.
However, she later joined university to study International Relations, which forced her to temporarily step back from performing. Yet music was always in her heart. After graduating, she took time to reflect deeply on what she truly wanted, and the answer was always the same: music.
Now, as she competes in X Factor Latvia 2025, Itha describes the experience as both exciting and terrifying.
"Being part of the competition is a dream come true. It’s an incredible platform to share my talent with the world. At first, I wasn’t sure if I’d be accepted, but I told myself that if I didn’t try, I’d never know," she says.
Through the competition, she has connected with artistes from diverse backgrounds, learned new vocal techniques and gained invaluable stage experience. She says that the exposure has not only boosted her confidence, but also reminded her of the universal power of music.
Itha is determined to continue writing, producing and performing songs that inspire healing and love. She dreams of releasing her debut album, going on international tours and collaborating with artists such as Matt Ngesa and other musicians from around the world.
Her message to young, aspiring artistes is one of perseverance and courage: “Never stop dreaming. Every opportunity, no matter how small, is a stepping stone. Keep going; your moment will come,” she emphasises.
