Campus confessions: Our hopeless basketball team at Egerton town campus
Mshaivuta mkia maishani bana…
Well, the Egerton University Town Campus ladies’ basketball team always did. On all basketball games but one. Na tukitoka hapo, tulitwangwa tukatolewa league.
Anyway, my story started in 2015. At the time there was a very active men’s basketball team and the ladies were just meh.
Our ‘sister’ team at Egerton Main Campus on the other hand were beasts. They were fast, strong, and never missed a shot- they trained with their men.
I remember our first game we were so blank we didn’t even know which side of the court to score at or who was the point guard or big man.
Tulikua tunajipata kila mahali kila saa, and we left there only having scored two baskets with our opponents with about 50.
We played so poorly because we were unaware of the game rules. So sema traveling, karibu tufike Timbuktu.
While the other team was manning us, we just wondered why they weren’t giving us our personal space…like ebu songa uko.
And like all games, communication is key. We didn’t have that. We just kept sneering at each other’s messes and calling the wrongdoers out in the field.
Lastly, we didn’t have ‘gas’- it is expected for sportsmen and women to have control of their breaths.
It was from here that we decided to be serious. Some of us anyway.
We put forth a zido (training) timetable that we were expected to follow to the letter, and we got a coach and training grounds.
The first day I showed up for training, sema kuhema. Our coach made us run five laps around the football field.
My heart then was like utasimama ama nisimame…na mimi nilisimama.
The next day I was unable to go to my classes because my body could not handle it. Turns out we were all just unfit. And most of us stayed unfit like that, ndio maana tulikua tunachapwa hivyo.
I have never seen a more resilient team than a losing team…ni kama arsenal venye wanajaribu kurudi top of the table lakini hio imeenda.
The most memorable thing though about these games was the chest bumps I had with my teammates- whether we lost or won.
At least I always had something to look forward to.
