Campus confessions: A group of drunk men, pretty women and a shocking alcohol bill
You would not really understand the spirit of Harambee, till you enrol into a Kenyan public university.
Back in campus, we truly embraced the Harambee spirit especially when it came to raising funds towards sherehes or getting fellow comrades out of jail.
As the responsible adults we were, we would often hold a small meeting before going out and plan everything to the last detail.
From what drinks we would be having, to what specific time we would be living the club.
Just as always, we made our plans around the little money we had and only went to places we could afford. This time though, we bit more than we could chew.
Instead of going to the normal local joint we were used to, we decided to visit a high end club with our " lady friends" in toe, putting the phrase drinks na mayeng’s into perspective.
With the added population, my two friends and I knew we would have to dig deeper into our pockets to be able to afford their drinks since we wanted to impress them.
Tulipiga sherehe ingine proper. It was our first time in that club and the experience was surreal.
Around one in the morning, just as the party was getting to its climax, sema kutokwa!!
Our lady friends moved to another table and from the looks of the people they went to seat with, they had serious cash.
As if that was not shock enough, the waiter came around with the bill. The amount that was on that receipt was something me and my two comrades had never imagined paying in a single night.
To add on to our woes, we had insufficient funds. The budget was sh. 4,000 but the bill was sh. 9,000. Let’s just say kilikuwa kimeturamba.
All over sudden, we had these bouncers around us. One would think we were VIPs. Their job however was to make sure we don't run away without paying.
The friends we had come with were nowhere to be seen.
By now, the waiter and bouncers had started getting impatient. We were forced to take loans from all the mobile loan apps we could think of.
We of course had to wake some of our friends up who thankfully came through.
After an intense one and a half hours, we managed to come up with the sh. 5,000.
We left the club without a single shilling to take us back to our hostel which was almost 10 kilometres away.
How we managed to get back to the hostel, is a story for another day.
