The emerging trend of Nakuru's working class spending lunch hour in liquor stores

An observation was done by Mtaa Wangu to find out how Nakuru residents behave during lunch hour.

As lunch time approaches, most of those working within Nakuru’s city centre go to their favourite restaurants for lunch, while others go "kwa mathe".

There are also those who simply let lunch time pass with stories or as Gen z's would put it, ‘wao hukula story’

One particular group that stood out though were those who were in liquor stores. Surprisingly, this was not just in one or two stores, but several.

For two consecutive days, the trend was the same with Friday afternoon being the peak of it all.

Upon entry into one of the stores, I noticed men with well-tailored suits and smart watches, giving the impression that these were not broke individuals.

In a bid to establish the reason behind this unexpected trend, Mtaa Wangu sort to speak to some of those in the liquor stores.

While engaging in casual talk over a drink with one of the customers, he said that after taking his lunch, he always comes in for a shot or two of tequila, as this keeps him active, preventing him from dozing off at work.

Another person said that coming to the store offers them an escape from work and that spending time there re-energizes them to go back to their work.

Upon closer inspection, I also noticed that there are those who would go ahead and mix their favourite drink with soda or juice into their water bottles and then head back to work.

I would say pay closer attention to the liquid in your co-worker’s water bottle, but we agreed as  a Nation that this year, we are in the business of minding our own business.
