For many job seekers, receiving a rejection after an interview can be discouraging. However, the period after an interview presents an important opportunity for learning and growth.

‎‎Asking for feedback from recruiters or hiring managers can help candidates understand their strengths, identify areas for improvement, and increase their chances of success in future interviews.

‎‎Career coach Roy Ndombi notes that many candidates overlook the value of feedback once the hiring decision has been made.

‎‎According to him, constructive feedback can provide insight into how employers perceived a candidate’s communication skills, experience, and overall suitability for the role. This information can help job seekers refine their interview techniques and better prepare for future opportunities.

‎‎Experts say feedback can also improve self-awareness and highlight aspects of an interview performance that candidates may not have noticed themselves. For example, a recruiter may point out that a candidate needed clearer examples when answering questions or that another applicant had stronger technical experience.

‎‎"Understanding such details can guide job seekers in building new skills and presenting themselves more effectively," he says

‎‎Beyond personal improvement, asking for feedback can also strengthen professional relationships. Demonstrating a willingness to learn shows professionalism and maturity, which can leave a positive impression on hiring managers and keep doors open for future opportunities within the organization.

‎‎Ndombi advises job seekers to request feedback in a polite and professional manner. He recommends starting by thanking the interviewer for the opportunity and expressing appreciation for the time spent during the interview process. Candidates should then clearly explain that they are seeking feedback to improve their interview performance.

‎‎“Keep the message short and respectful,” Ndombi says. “Ask for advice rather than demanding explanations. For example, you can say you would appreciate any suggestions on how to improve your responses or presentation during interviews.”

‎‎He also suggests sending the request through email within a day or two of receiving the interview outcome. Even if employers do not respond, the gesture demonstrates professionalism and a growth mindset qualities that can benefit job seekers in the long run.
