Why employers may be rejecting your job application

With every cover letter and CV drafted, the hope is to get an email or call from your future employers notifying you of a scheduled day for the interview.

However, it can be frustrating to get the “we regret” email from them or worse, no response at all.

Mtaa Wangu sought the advice of the founder of KKay HR Solutions, Kevin Thananga, on why most applications may not get you a seat at the interview table and possible solutions to it.

Mr. Thananga says that in the era of artificial intelligence some people use soft wares to generate their CV. Further mentioning it is quite easy to tell a robotic CV.

“Copy and pasting text from Chat GPT to your resume will automatically put off the hiring manager. More often than not automated systems can detect and reject these CVs. People should just be able to express their interests and abilities in a simple language,” he notes.

Secondly, he notes it's only fair to yourself to apply for a job you are qualified for, adding that some individuals have no passion for the job rather the pay it offers.

“Stop going for a senior or high-end position if you are not qualified for it. There is a reason an employer quotes the level of experience required in the job description. It is disheartening to hear that someone applied for so many jobs, yet got no response. This might be the reason why,” he notes

Further adding that,” This then calls for self-reflection, did I qualify for these jobs? You can start from volunteering to get experience or take entry jobs and build on your experience to help you settle for the great opportunities you admire. Do not apply for a job far off from your career ladder,” he advises.

Additionally, he says as a job seeker it is important to quantify your accomplishments and make sure they are verifiable.

“Success rates can be checked through the referees attached on your CV. It is important then that they can support whatever you have captured. Referees can be one person who sit between you and employment if they offer contradictory statements about you to your future employer,” he reveals.

Lastly, he notes that people should take the applications they send out with the seriousness it deserves. Advising people to get their documents in order.

“Don’t go attach photos of your document, yet people who are applying for the same position with you have their documents scanned. You get one chance to make an impression, maximize on it. Be precise to the point and avoid sloppy mistakes including the grammatical errors,” he concludes
