New to an organisation? Here are 5 tips to help you settle in

When new to an organisation always look for a friend who will help show you around.

When you receive an acceptance letter in response to a job application, you are initially overjoyed that you have finally landed a job.

But soon the reality of being the new kid on the block sets in.
Joining an organisation or company as the new person when cliques already exist can be quite a humbling experience.

So what should you do as the new kid? Here is a guide to help you settle in a little faster.

1. Take a week to simply observe your new environment.

Observing will help you learn the dress code and work culture quickly, which will then help you avoid ruffling feathers in your new workplace.

2. Ask questions.

When you are new to an organisation, there is so much you need to learn about how things work and what is expected of you. To avoid making a lot of unnecessary mistakes, ask questions.

3. Get a friend in the office

This could be your desk mate or someone else in the office. Why? This friend will help you know how things work and even provide you with stability, even if the friendship is only short term.

4. Avoid getting involved in workplace politics or gossip.

This will help you stay drama-free while you try to learn about your new role and environment. Remember that you have been hired to work, not to engage in frivolous activities.

5. Be gentle with yourself.

It is okay if it takes you a little longer to make friends or even catch up with your colleagues. It is also okay to make mistakes in the first few weeks or months. Instead of wallowing in self-pity, focus on reminding yourself that you were hired because you are deserving and qualified. Just remember to do your best - you've got this!
