Negotiating your salary package like a chess master

Every pawn is an important piece towards getting the checkmate. This also applies to the art of negotiation when applying for a job.

Getting a fat pay check may not be the end goal, but other benefits and perks might be the pawns that lead you to say CHECKMATE.

Many job seekers, like amateur chess players, leave these powerful pieces lying dormant on the table.

Just as a grandmaster sees the whole board, Eunice Victoria, a Career Coach, teaches new job seekers and professionals wishing to advance in their careers tips on how to view their career moves strategically.

1. Understanding the company

Before coming to the negotiation table, one needs to research thoroughly.

Understand the company before you understand yourself. This means understanding the industry, salary ranges for similar roles, and the company’s compensation structure. Knowing this will help you make informed decisions during the negotiation.

Usually this entails understanding the psychology of an employer. The more you can solve that problem, the stronger your negotiating position becomes. Prove your worth by using concrete numbers and examples from your previous roles to illustrate how you've successfully addressed similar challenges.

2. Leverage your value proposition.

Look into other terms as well, not just money. Always ask for things that are important to you. This may include working close to home due to having a family or being given an enabling environment if you have special needs. Always negotiate what you can handle.

For candidates looking to advance their careers, the career coach additionally recommends looking at the bigger picture as opposed to leaving a job because of a lack of satisfaction. One can always negotiate for different tasks, responsibilities, and additional perks, as opposed to leaving to avoid regretting later.

3. Ask targeted questions and gather useful information.

The key to a successful negotiation is clarifying expectations, allowing you to make an informed decision about your future role. This clarity often comes from the questions you ask when given the opportunity, typically when the interviewer says, "Do you have any questions for us?"

Inquire about the scope of your potential role- Will you have chances to expand your skills? Ask about budget responsibilities, leadership opportunities, and how the company approaches innovation.

Asking these questions helps one assess whether the role aligns with their career goals or not.

While negotiating can be a daunting task it is a skill that can be honed over time.
