In today’s evolving job market, a strong personal brand is no longer a luxury but a necessity for career success and longevity.

Roy Ndombi, a career coach, defines personal branding as, “What people see when you're not in the room.”

Many people mistakenly view social media as the sole avenue for showcasing their brand.

However, personal branding extends far beyond just a social media presence. It comprises how you groom yourself, how you carry yourself, and how you present your values and ideals to the world.

Brands serve as a form of self-expression that seamlessly blend with an individual’s life and core beliefs.

Ndombi says building and maintaining a personal brand can offer many benefits, such as advancing your career, establishing credibility, and opening doors to new opportunities.

“While a strong resume and portfolio are vital to advancing any career, a memorable persona is key to getting noticed and remembered. Your brand incorporates your work and achievements, covers who you are, how you build meaningful connections, and inspire and lead teams,” says Ndombi of Royal Elite Coach.

He adds that opportunities are often awarded on trust and reputation and while skills and achievements are essential, a strong personal brand enables you to showcase them in the best light, amplifying your credibility and impact.

Many may ask when the correct time is to build your brand.

Ndombi says with personal branding, it's never too late to start. Whether you're just beginning your career or are looking to pivot into a new field, you can begin crafting your brand today.

“It’s a process that evolves, and it’s always within your control to shape it,” Ndombi asserts.

Why then is it important for one to have a personal brand?

According to the expert, there are several reasons why branding, and a personal brand for that matter is important.

1.     Uniqueness

Personal branding helps you stand out. It’s about communicating who you are and what makes you special.

2.     Credibility

Credibility is key to earning trust and respect within your industry. A strong personal brand enhances your professional reputation, making you a credible source of knowledge and expertise. “When people know what you stand for, they trust you,” Ndombi says.

3.     Visibility

Effective personal branding increases your visibility within your industry, helping you attract attention from potential employers, collaborators, and clients. A well-established brand can open doors you might not have expected.

4.     Networking and Self-Awareness

Personal branding allows you to network with like-minded professionals who share your values. It also promotes self-awareness, as it encourages you to reflect on your strengths and what you want to represent.

“Building a personal brand is as much about understanding yourself as it is about how the world sees you,” notes Ndombi.

5.     Life and Career Goals

Your brand communicates your goals and aspirations, making it easier for people to connect with you over shared interests or professional ambitions. Your brand helps people understand your purpose, what you're passionate about, and the direction you're headed in.

Many hiring managers turn to social media to understand who you are as a person and as a professional hence Ndombi advises the strategic use of social media.

“Employers often look at your online presence to gauge your character and see if you’re genuinely aligned with the values you present or if you’re just putting up a front,” he says adding that “How you respond to posts, what you share, and how you engage with others online speaks volumes about your inner values and the kind of professional you are.”

Above all else ensure consistency in your brand, whether online or in person.

A clear, authentic personal brand makes it easier to build trust, gain credibility, and stand out in a competitive job market.
