In 2022, Jacob Odundo's job came to an abrupt end following a change in leadership at his workplace, forcing him to seek alternative sources of income.

"After the election, new leadership took over, and we were immediately informed that our services were no longer needed. It wasn’t easy, especially since I didn’t have another job lined up," he recalls.

Despite the uncertainty, Odundo found solace in writing.

"I started doing freelance writing as a side hustle, crafting articles for individuals in the political science field and politicians. Even in distress, I refused to let the situation break me. My resilience became my anchor," he says.

He understood that losing his job wasn’t a reflection of his performance and chose not to fall into self-doubt.

"I knew the road ahead would be challenging, but I also believed that where there’s change, there’s opportunity," Karani adds.

His strong professional network proved to be a game-changer.

"I was fortunate to have connections I could rely on. This gave me a platform to showcase my skills and knowledge, ultimately leading to another opportunity," he explains.

Odundo eventually secured a position at a non-governmental organisation. He emphasises the importance of a strategic and genuine approach to job searching.

"Reach out to people—not by spamming them but with personalised messages. Prioritise those you have a good relationship with and have kept in touch with you," he advises.

Additionally, he ensured his portfolio was up to date with recent projects, which helped him stand out when applying for new roles.

Odundo also encourages job seekers to consider freelancing or entrepreneurship as they navigate career transitions.

"With the rise of the gig economy, there are many opportunities for freelancers across various fields," he notes.

While losing a job can be discouraging, he stresses the importance of maintaining a positive mind set.

"It’s easy to feel down after being laid off, but staying optimistic is key to moving forward," he says.
