For many professionals, career growth does not always follow a straight path. At times, uncertainty about identity, direction and long-term strategy can create confusion, especially in fast-changing workplaces.

‎‎For Beatrice Ndinda, an accountant, this confusion became evident a few years into her career. Although she had built what many would consider a stable path in accounting, she often found herself questioning whether she was truly on the right track.

‎‎“I studied accounting and secured a job in the field, which felt like the logical step,” she explains. “However, after some time I started wondering if the work reflected who I really was professionally or if I was simply following a path that was expected of me.”

‎‎According to Ndinda, the uncertainty was not necessarily about leaving the profession altogether but about understanding how her skills, interests and long-term goals aligned. At times she struggled to decide whether she should pursue specialization, aim for leadership roles or explore other opportunities within the broader financial sector.

‎‎Eventually, Ndinda began taking deliberate steps to address the confusion. First, she spent time reflecting on her strengths and the aspects of accounting she enjoyed most, particularly financial analysis and strategic planning. She also spoke with mentors within her industry who helped her understand the different career paths available.

‎‎In addition, she enrolled in short professional courses to sharpen her skills and gain confidence in areas that interested her most. Through these steps, she was able to define a clearer professional identity and set specific goals for her growth in the accounting field.

‎‎Career coach Eunice Victoria notes that such experiences are common among professionals, particularly in the early and mid-stages of their careers.

‎‎“Career confusion usually comes from three main areas: identity, direction and strategy,” she explains. “Many people do not clearly define who they are professionally, where they want to go, or how they will get there.”

‎‎To avoid identity confusion, Victoria advises professionals to evaluate their strengths, values and interests in order to build a clear professional identity.

‎She also emphasizes the importance of defining direction by setting long-term goals and developing a strategy that includes gaining relevant skills, seeking mentorship and continuously reviewing career progress.
