As 2025 draws to a close, many professionals are taking time to reflect on their career journeys, assessing not only how far they’ve come but also the lessons learned along the way.

This period of self-evaluation provides valuable insight that can shape more intentional and fulfilling goals for 2026.

Ruth Magak, a Communication Expert notes that her progress is not measured by promotions or job titles but by the skills she acquires along the way.

“Each year, I evaluate my growth based on what new abilities or certifications I have added to my portfolio, whether a professional course or a new practical skill,” she says.

She emphasizes that her focus has always been on developing capacity rather than chasing hierarchical advancement.

“This approach allows me to remain adaptable, whether I choose to stay within the same organization or transition into a new opportunity,”.

According to Career Coach Douglas Wanjala, year-end reflection should begin by identifying one’s top three to five achievements of the year, no matter how small.

He advises professionals to start by speaking with managers or colleagues who might highlight contributions they themselves may overlook.

"Reviewing performance reports, self-assessments, or even emails and calendars can also help uncover moments of success that might have been forgotten amid daily routines," he notes.

Wanjala adds that professionals should take stock of challenges they’ve overcome, as resilience and problem-solving are key indicators of career growth.

"Listing new certifications or skills acquired during the year also provides tangible proof of progress, reinforcing one’s professional development trajectory," he says.

Looking toward 2026, Wanjala encourages people to set goals that build upon their accomplishments while addressing areas for improvement.

By aligning these objectives with long-term visions, individuals can ensure steady progress and continued fulfillment in their careers.
