Naivasha has become a prime destination for both sherehe and conferences, resulting in a significant rise in the number of Airbnbs catering to revellers and corporate visitors alike.

Gladys Murigi, who began hosting in 2020, observes a steady growth in the town's Airbnb scene. "The number of listings has increased substantially. I've personally expanded from just one unit to eight," she says.

She attributes this rise to the growing number of conference facilities in the area, noting that many attendees prefer staying in Airbnbs rather than at the conference venues themselves because of the cost.

Gladys also points out that the annual World Rally Championship has been a major contributor to the demand, as the influx of visitors often exceeds the available accommodations.

Dennis Mwangi, who has been working with an Airbnb agency since 2021, has also expanded his portfolio to include 50 units across various estates in Nakuru.

He attributes the growth to the rising interest in short-term, affordable rentals, especially during weekends, holidays, work trips, and major events.

Mwangi further notes that Naivasha’s proximity to Nairobi has boosted its popularity, as Airbnbs offer the flexibility for people to work remotely while enjoying the comforts of home which have become popular, threatening the existence of traditional hotels.

He says Airbnbs have an edge over the hotels in that prices are negotiable, allowing clients to stay for extended periods.

"Most people have decided to venture into the Airbnb business after noting that they are in high demand in Naivasha," says Mwangi.

He adds that this boom has also led to most of the developers building new apartments that are fully Airbnb rather than having them rented.
