Plants and flowers add beauty and comfort to homes, while also providing fresh air and naturally repelling pests.

But if you have a history of struggling to keep plants alive, don't let that stop you from creating the lush interior you want.

Strategically using artificial plants can give your home reliable greenery as you work on improving your indoor gardening skills.

In urban areas, artificial indoor plants have gained popularity, leading to a rise in businesses in Nakuru, where entrepreneurs have capitalised on this growing trend.

Beryl Awuor, who sells artificial decorations, explains that she started offering these products after customers who bought her curtains and duvets began requesting them.

"Initially, I only sold artificial decorations on request, but after recognising the demand, I expanded my inventory and now offer a wider variety," she says.

Beryl aims to focus entirely on selling artificial decorations and become a leader in the industry.

Ruth Macharia, an interior designer, believes the surge in artificial plant business is inevitable. She explains that artificial plants are a practical choice for people who lack the interest, knowledge, or time to care for real plants.

"They’re an easy, no-maintenance way to brighten up a dull corner, and they’re perfect for areas where real plants wouldn’t survive due to too much or too little sunlight," says Ms. Macharia.

She adds that artificial plants are designed to look almost as natural as real ones but don’t require sunlight, water, or specific temperature and humidity conditions.

"Artificial plants are ideal for frequent travellers or those not ready for the responsibility of caring for live plants. They require no upkeep and offer a simple way to bring a touch of nature into your home, making your space feel brighter," she notes.

Moreover, Ms. Macharia points out that artificial plants are often more affordable depending on the size than live ones, with prices ranging from Sh 350 to Sh 8,500.

"Artificial plants can look stunning if chosen wisely. Caring for them is also straightforward—just a gentle wipe down with a damp cloth from time to time is all they need," she says.

Finally, she mentions that artificial plants are hypoallergenic and non-toxic, making them a great option for those allergic to pollen.

“Unlike live plants, these decorations can be enjoyed for years without causing allergies.”
